The Wild Wellington Full Day tour is a combination of our Seal Colony & Farm tour and a visit to ZEALANDIA, the world’s first fully-fenced urban eco-sanctuary.
The tour will start with pick up from your central city accommodation before leaving the city past some of Wellington’s most iconic sights. Arriving at the eco-sanctuary, you will be taken on a 2-hour guided tour around ZEALANDIA with a specially trained guide, discovering the wonders of New Zealand’s flora and fauna. This ground-breaking conservation project has reintroduced 17 species of native wildlife back into the area, 6 of which were previously absent from mainland New Zealand for over 100 years.
Keep your eyes open for native birds like Tui, Kereru, Kaka, Kakariki, Takahe, Bellbirds, North Island Robins, and other intriguing creatures such as Tuatara and Weta. Then relax in the Rata cafe having lunch over-looking the sanctuary, listening to the beautiful sounds of New Zealand’s unique wildlife.
After lunch, enjoy an exhilarating journey through Terawhiti Station to the dramatic Seal Coast south of the city. Home of New Zealand’s most modern wind farm, Terawhiti Station is also a working beef and sheep farm. As we drive through the farm we discuss the history of farming and electricity generation in the area. We will drive you across a live active fault line, over rocky beachfront and around headlands to visit a colony of wild New Zealand Fur Seals. The views on this tour are exceptional – weather permitting, you’ll see the Tasman Sea meet the Pacific Ocean, the tumultuous waters of Cook Strait separating the North and South Islands, and the distant mountain ranges of the South Island.
